Thereβs something I don't hear enough about from my fellow solopreneurs and lifestyle business owners:
How leaving corporate jobs, building a business, and controlling your calendar allows you to reinvest in your health and wellness.
I know I annoy people with all my talk of exercise, outdoor activity, time in nature, and taking care of physical, emotional, and mental health. Sorry about that! However, I keep doing it because it is so important.
You only get one body and one life. You can push things hard for a few decades when you are younger. Abusing your body with a lack of sleep, a poor diet, little to no exercise, and sitting in a chair working all day. Sadly, I did!
However, you start paying the piper in your late 40s, 50s, and beyond. I'm sorry, but it's inevitable.
The longer you wait to find a better balance, the steeper the price will be. And, sometimes, you can't fix what's broken.
I know some of you personally, and I care about you. I don't want you to make some mistakes that others couldn't recover from. There are a few of these folks who are no longer with us. π
Please take care of yourself!
For example, my wife and I have been hiking and running a lot more now that the weather is finally nice up here. And, apparently, my body is happy with that! Below are my recent blood pressure and pulse measurements.
Schedule time on your calendar for exercise and wellness activities, just as you would for any other essential meeting. Your health is just as important as the different time investments you make in your business (e.g., time for marketing, sales calls, operational tasks, etc.).
Something you could try:
Do some day theming to pick a day (or just a morning or afternoon) when you will take time for yourself for some healthy activity (e.g., we go on hikes every Wed).
Use time blocking to reserve time on your calendar for exercise (e.g., an hour in the morning for yoga, cycling, or weightlifting).
Schedule walking meetings that you can take using a headset with your phone (many of my friends do this).
You may think you donβt have time for this nonsense. Youβre just too busy running your business! Well, let me tell you something. The improved energy, mood, and drive you get from being healthier pays for itself. You will be more creative. People will notice that you look younger and more dynamic. You will be able to work longer with less fatigue. You wonβt burn out!
What are you currently doing to invest in your health while operating and growing your business? Leave a comment and let me know!

I went back to corporate 3 years ago. I figured it wouldn't be so bad, but it's really impacted my health. I only have 6 weeks left working there. I put my notice in back in April, with no transitional plan in place, but I'll be returning to self-employment. Giving that up was the worst thing I did!
