💡 Jumping Off the Hamster Wheel (Issue 132)
Freedom is on the other side of fear
Most of my colleagues thought I was crazy to leave the corporate world behind when I walked away from a ~20-year tech career in 2010.
But now I see that many of them have reached the same conclusion:
The hustle culture way of living and working is not sustainable.
It feels like some dystopian 9-5 version of Groundhog Day. You move from project to project, team to team, and company to company. The brand colors and logos change, but the dysfunctional themes keep repeating.
Toxic bosses
Annoying coworkers
Under-funded initiatives
Projects going off the rails
Angry executives threatening you
Being flogged to work harder and faster
Trapped in the hustle culture that just makes the people at the top more wealthy
At some point, you can't stand the idea of another Monday in this endless stress loop.
But, you know what? It's okay to change course. It's never too late.
You can create a life with better harmony between how you work and how you live. But only if you're the one in control.
If you report to someone else, you will never fully control your calendar, own your time, or decide how, when, and where you work. Not completely.
And you'll certainly not control with whom you work. Sorry, you just won't.
However, if you're ready to jump off the hamster wheel and chart your own course with a better, healthier, and more meaningful path in life, it is possible.
At some point, you'll stop seeing "building a lifestyle business" as an insult and start seeing it as your salvation.
Life is better on the other side. I know.
BUT, let me be clear about something. This is a scary time to take big risks, especially in America.
The economy is in chaos.
The job market is terrible.
Companies are pulling back on investments and conducting more layoffs.
People are nervous about spending money, especially if your business sells nonessential products and services.
Starting a new business is always hard. It's even more challenging in a bad economy!
So, unless you’ve already been building a successful venture on the side, or you’ve already lost your job and need to get income flowing in, don't leap off the corporate hamster wheel yet.
However, now is definitely the time to start planning your business. And you can start testing your business concepts to get additional income flowing in, building your customer list, and learning valuable lessons that will help you succeed later.
I’m happy to jump on a free call with you to discuss it more.
