As a business owner, you no longer have to work with people you donāt enjoy spending time with.
My political and moral beliefs are no secret. Iām pretty active on Substack Notes, where I share my thoughts and feelings daily. For example, people know that Iām not a Trump supporter. I know some people donāt like that. So, I know Iāve lost their business, and thatās okay with me.
I would rather not work with or spend time with people who are:
Racist
Sexist
Homophobic
Transphobic
Xenophobic
Massive hypocrites
I'll get by just fine without their dirty money. I would rather spend my time with good, kind, empathetic, compassionate, and honest people who arenāt celebrating the collapse of our democracy, disregard for our constitution, and reckless endangerment of our citizens.
When you leave a job and build your own business, you get to decide who you spend your time with every day (e.g., business partners, collaborators, clients, customers). This is especially true for a solopreneur.

Guess what? You can do that, too.
Note: You cannot discriminate against customers based on protected characteristics such as race, gender, or disability under federal and state laws. However, you can refuse service for non-discriminatory reasons (e.g., hostile behavior from a potential client).
