āPeople are losing their sense of purpose.
They feel adrift, and some die soon after retirement.ā
I caught up with some old friends from my previous corporate life this past weekend. We are all semi-retired. I went all in on my lifestyle business 8 years ago when I started coaching. I had already escaped the corporate world 14 years ago when I started consulting. But they are more recent escapees.
Some research has found that people live longer if they retire later. Iām not surprised. A purpose ā a reason to wake up every day ā is essential for our well-being. My friends and I both know many people who died either before they could retire or soon afterward.
However, stress kills, too. So, I think itās dangerous to tell people they will live longer if they stick it out in some soul-sucking job until the day they die. It also sounds pretty miserable!
So, what is one to do? Well, I think you know what Iām going to say. Itās the same reason Iāve been trying to convince my friends to join me in a new lifestyle business venture.
Work is stressful when you arenāt in control. Itās terrible when you work for a bad boss or in a toxic work environment. Having no say over how you spend your days also feels pretty bad.
ButĀ when you create a lifestyle business, that all changes.Ā You are in control!Ā You decide how, when, and where you will work and with whom.
No more bosses.
No forced return to office
No more unpleasant coworkers.
No more toxic work environments.
No more meaningless BS that wastes the precious remaining time you have left.
My friends and I discussed that strange moment when youāre no longer striving to achieve some big goal in life. We spend most of our lives āclimbing mountainsā and pushing into the winds of challenges.
For example:
Graduate from high school
Get your college degree
Pursue an advanced degree
Land your first real job
Get promoted and climb the ladder
Achieve some sort of financial success
Get married
Have children
Reach that mythically magical moment of retirement
However, after you enjoy the first few weeks or months of retirement freedom, you wake up one day and say:
āNow what? What am I supposed to do with the rest of my life? What is my purpose now? What goal am I pursuing? Anything? Anything at all?ā
Building a business around a sense of personal purpose is empowering. Working on something that matters will get you out of bed every day. Doing all of it the way you want will help you eliminate the stress of a typical job.
So, what will your purpose be when you leave the 9-5 world?
What matters most to you? What change do you want to see in the world?
How can you build a business around that so you have something meaningful to focus on for the rest of your working days?
