💡 Don't Tie Yourself Down (Issue 102)
A location-independent business is so amazing
I’m writing this newsletter from a remote research station in Alaska. I’ve been volunteering here for a couple of weeks and spending time with my daughter, who is a scientist with NOAA. When I flew in, I also visited with my oldest son for a couple of days in Juneau.
This is only possible because I intentionally designed the most flexible solopreneur business I could when planning this phase of my life years ago. I didn’t want to be tied down in any sense, so I don’t have a physical business location, employees, partners, or goods and services that require physical delivery.
However, I spent most of my working life forced to be in an office, forced to work with other people, and forced to work at specific times. But I’m an introvert who craves nature, freedom, and autonomy, so it was slowly killing me. I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm not. A health scare woke me up, so I made a drastic change and left the corporate world forever in 2010.
Now that my children are grown and flown, I appreciate this location-independent business even more. My wife and I can book a flight and spend weeks with them whenever we want. As long as I have my phone, laptop, and internet, I can work from anywhere in the world. I have deliberately designed my work schedule around my ideal life (e.g., using day theming and time blocking), so I’m not working 40-hour weeks and am rarely required to work at a specific time.
I want the same freedom and flexibility for all of you! Therefore, I ask my solopreneur clients and workshop attendees to design their ideal life first, then design a business around it that makes it all possible.
No, I’m not talking about the money side of things when I say “make it possible.” Yes, you need to make money, but I know millionaires and billionaires who can’t live free lives because they’ve backed themselves into a corner—trapped by their business models and life choices.
Money doesn’t set you free unless you make a ton of it and force yourself to retire and walk away while you can still enjoy life (nicely done, Tom Anderson).
Good luck with that! Most people never do.
You set yourself free. YOU! The power is in your hands to make that happen.
Build a scalable, flexible, and location-independent business, and you can start living a life of freedom now.
